The field of Urban Infrastructure Engineering is a profession that has the responsibility to confront desperate social needs toward the mankind’s longevity. With the divine mission to meet the needs, the Sustainable Structural Systems and Materials Lab in UNIST is dedicated to research and innovation on the sustainable development of urban infrastructure and the resilient protection of built environment against extreme multi-hazards. Prof. Shin’s research interests are well aligned with the mission of the laboratory, and can be categorized into the following four areas: (1) earthquake-resistant design, modeling, and assessment of civil infrastructures, (2) design optimization of tall buildings subjected to extreme multi-hazards, (3) high performance eco-friendly construction materials (e.g., fiber-reinforced cement composites, sulfur composites, self-healing cementitious materials, and recycled aggregate concrete), and (4) non-destructive evaluation technologies based on ultrasound such as surface, diffuse, and nonlinear waves.
